Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Investment Todd McClay will travel to Saudi Arabia and the United States this week for a series of meetings to strengthen trade and investment ties.
In Washington, D.C. he will meet with the U.S. Trade Representative, Secretary of Agriculture, and industry representatives. Discussions will include the US decision to introduce new tariffs and what this means for New Zealand exporters.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has noted that President Donald Trump remains “very fixed in his views” on the tariff policy, which imposes a 15 percent duty on countries with a trade surplus with the United States. Despite this, New Zealand will continue to engage at all levels, with upcoming meetings at the ASEAN Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Malaysia and the APEC Leaders’ Summit in South Korea providing further opportunities for dialogue.
We wish the Minister well for his visit and hope the meetings will cast light on how New Zealand can be restored to the baseline tariff rate.
