Navigating US Trade Policies and Tariffs: Insights from NZUS Council Executive Director Fiona Cooper
In a recent interview on The Front Page podcast, Council Executive Director Fiona Cooper discussed how evolving US trade policies and possible new tariffs could impact New Zealand businesses. She highlighted the need for more information to understand the potential impacts, and the importance of maintaining a resilient, forward-looking approach in NZ-US trade relations.
Fiona noted that with the US reassessing its trade priorities, it is crucial for New Zealand to stay adaptable. “By understanding shifts in US trade strategies, we can better position New Zealand as a trusted partner.”New Zealand exports a broad range of goods and services to the USA which is our second largest export market and third largest trading partner. New Zealand exporters of primary products, technology and specialised manufacturing have a strong reputation in the US for high quality, innovative products and services that meet the needs of US consumers and US companies. We have a great story to tell and we look forward to sharing that with the incoming Administration.
The episode also featured Kate Acland, Chair of Beef + Lamb New Zealand, who addressed concerns over proposed 10%-20% tariffs on imports into the US, given that the US is New Zealand’s largest beef market and an important market for lamb and other meat products.
