The NZUS Council and Victoria University of Wellington’s Centre for Strategic Studies were proud to co-host an insightful discussion last month on the challenges facing global leadership with David Sanger, the esteemed White House and national security correspondent for The New York Times.

In conversation with Professor David Capie, Sanger explored the complex dynamics shaping the new era of strategic competition, hot and cold wars in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, and about the future of American leadership. The discussion delved into some of the critical questions of our time: the implications of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the risks of conflict in the Taiwan Strait, and the enduring question of whether a polarized United States can still provide the global leadership the world has long relied on.

Sanger’s latest book, New Cold Wars (available at Unity Books in Wellington), offers a deeply researched analysis of these pressing issues, drawing on interviews with top officials and experts across the globe.

The NZUS Council remains committed to fostering these important conversations as we navigate the future of international relations and US leadership.
