The NZUS Council was pleased to host Professor Joseph Liow, Dean and Wang Gungwu Chair Professor in East Asia Affairs at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, for a wide-ranging discussion last Friday during his visit to New Zealand as a non-resident Fellow at the Asia New Zealand Foundation. We thanks the Foundation for the opportunity to meet Professor Liow.
Professor Liow’s expertise in regional geopolitics provided an invaluable foundation for examining the strategic trends shaping New Zealand’s operating environment.
It was a fascinating discussion about the strategic landscape shaping our region. Professor Liow shared valuable insights on:
- US–China competition and its implications for the Indo-Pacific.
- The challenges for small states to manage relationships with the USA and China.
- The outlook for peace in the Middle East.
Professor Liow’s insights underscored the complexity of the regional landscape and the need for ongoing dialogue as geopolitical trends continue to evolve.
The NZUS Council thanks Professor Liow, the Asia New Zealand Foundation, MFAT, and all attendees for contributing to a thoughtful and timely discussion.
