The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s latest Weekly Global Economic Report highlights developments with implications for New Zealand’s international trade and economic engagement, including those of particular relevance to New Zealand’s trade with the United States.
Of note is the expansion of US tariffs on steel and aluminium-containing goods. A 50 percent duty on metallic content has been added, alongside the reciprocal tariff already applied to New Zealand exports. These changes reinforce the ongoing challenges exporters face in navigating complex tariff settings.
Minister Todd McClay also met in Washington with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins, with discussions focused on the tariff impacts and the need for ongoing dialogue.
The US has also launched a Section 232 investigation into wind turbines and components, with submissions open until 9 September.
